Belong: Photography Exhibit at Old Trafford Safestore

An art exhibition in a storage unit

Opening Night

23rd February 2016 – Four photography students from the University of Salford will be exhibiting their work at a local Safestore Self Storage Centre at Brindley Road, Old Trafford on Thursday 3rd March between 4pm and 8pm.

The theme for the exhibition is ‘Belong’ and looks at how people’s belongings have been taken out of place and out of context, and positioned where they don’t usually belong.

What would you choose?

Student Jeni Harney explains further: ‘Self storage to us meant a place where people can store excess items, belongings and things they didn't have room for at home. My particular work looks at poverty and homelessness, asking people to select six things they would save if their home was repossessed which I’d then photograph.’

Three other students are also exhibiting at the store looking at different areas how of we relate to our belongings. Becky Hollingsworth is photographing objects related to family members whilst Menna Jones has asked university friends to bring in items to be photographed that remind them of home. Coral Talbot is looking at consumerism and how we are obsessed with our belongings.

Jeni added ‘It’s been great to be able to use the large space at Safestore to exhibit our photography project and it’s especially exciting and poignant given the theme of our display to be able to use a place which looks after the belongings we don’t have room for at home. We do hope the public will be able to identify the importance of belongings and we look forward to welcoming visitors to the exhibition to see our work.’

Alistair Johnson, Store Manager at Safestore Manchester Old Trafford said: ‘We’re really pleased to be able to offer the space to the students so they can showcase their work to the public. It’s a great opportunity for us to link up with the local university and we hope that the public will come along and take a look at the exhibition and see all the hard work that’s been put into it.’

The exhibition will also be open at 10am to 2pm from Friday 4th to Monday 7th March.
