Coventry roofs could go green

11 September 2007

An innovative proposal to reduce Coventry's carbon emissions could radically alter the city's appearance.

Councillors are considering the installation of grass roofs on buildings in the West Midlands city centre as part of the local authority's new climate change strategy, the Coventry Telegraph reports.

A similar measure has proved popular at a local school in Coundon and council officials will now decide whether to extend the project to other buildings in the city. If successful, homeowners in Coventry could eventually have their own "living roofs".

"We've got to start taking action now to protect the planet for future generations and we know that many Coventry people feel passionate about doing all we can to make a difference," said Gary Ridley, council cabinet member for climate change.

The council will run a public consultation period on the strategy until the end of the year.

A new 12-storey hotel development near the Ricoh Arena in Coventry has been refused planning permission after concerns over the suitability of its design and its impact on the surrounding houses, it emerged last week.

Coventry residents may like to consider self storage for their homes.
