This advice comes from across the Atlantic where Canadian householders have been offered tips on how best to get organised.
Among the advice from CanWest News Service, is the idea of setting aside labelled boxes and bags for things that may be thrown away; for example, one for a charity shop and one for the bin.
Cleaning floors and counters may provide the cleaner with a sense of control as a starting point, while tackling bookshelves and getting rid of unread books and knick-knacks is an effective way of de-cluttering living space.
"Clearing the clutter of closets is another task that can overwhelm you," writes the publication's Stefanie Fraser.
"Try focusing on one item, such as your shoe collection, belts or bags before tackling clothes. Set a time limit when sorting your clothes and be ruthless," she added.
