Mirrors 'make rooms appear larger'

24 April 2008

Householders looking to create more space in their home have been offered advice from one interior design expert.

Hugh Jamieson, fellow of the British Interior Design Association and senior designer of At Home, says that mirrors are a good way to make a room appear larger.

"The bigger the better," he states. Mr Jamieson also recommends putting mirrors at right angles next to windows, which will create a lot more light in a room.

Meanwhile, the choice of decor can also create the illusion of space.

"Stripes will add height to a room," Mr Jamieson asserts.

"If they are wide and bold you can fulfil two needs at the same time - one gives the illusion of more height to the room and a bolder stripe will make it more impressive."

Opening up the garden and using tricks to deceive the eye, such as mirrors, have also been put forward as suggestions by Gardening Which?.

Increasing a property's storage capacity by investing in a new storage facility may also serve to create more space in a home.
