Householders looking to renovate their property have been offered tips by an industry body.

The Homebuilding & Renovating Show has provided ten top tips for budding DIYers to add value to their house - something that may be especially pertinent in the current economic climate, the company states.

Updating the kitchen is at the top of the list, which can be given a good makeover "for only a modest outlay". If the structures within the kitchen are in good condition, adding new doors, handles and worktops may be a good way to spruce it up.

Re-tiling the bathroom and replacing a coloured suit with a white one could cost as little as £500, it claims.

Elsewhere in the house, a downstairs toilet could be installed, while a conservatory can add space and light to a property.

A loft conversion and replacing windows are also suggestions put forward, as well as tidying up the garden, doing necessary maintenance work and topping up painting and decorating work.

Another report from the Homebuilding & Renovating Show recently advised adding environmentally-friendly features to a house in order to appeal to buyers.

Renovating a property can also call for a new storage facility to create more space and make the most of the improvements.
