Lack of storage 'could lead to garden thefts'

09 May 2008

A lack of storage space may lead to the theft of personal items, it has been claimed.

People will soon begin to spend more time in their gardens as a result of the recent good weather, which has prompted insurance company esure to warn householders about their belongings.

The company states that over one in ten people will spend in excess of £500 on their garden, including tools, furniture and ornaments, but that storing these items in traditional storage spaces, such as the garage or the loft, is leading to them being stolen.

Furthermore, some homeowners leave their possessions outside over night, thus increasing the risk.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, commented: "The trend towards converting useful storage space into valuable living space and the nation's obsession with hoarding clutter is putting pressure on garden storage and may cause a surge in garden theft as belongings are left unsecured and vulnerable."

It was reported earlier this week that Britons were making the most of the mini heat wave as temperatures reached 24 degrees C on Wednesday, the Telegraph reports.

Householders should be sure to invest in a good storage system to meet with their garden's needs this summer.
