This bank holiday, homeowners planning a trip away should be sure to secure their belongings in order to protect against burglaries.
Churchill has warned that many
householders return from breaks away to find that they have been burgled.
One in ten homes have been robbed while occupants have been on holiday, away for the weekend or simply on a day trip, the insurance provider records.
The most popular items to appear in thieves' swag bags are DVDs, CDs and videos, jewellery, money, cheque books or credit cards and televisions, DVD players and video equipment, as well as games consoles and cameras.
"Arriving back from a holiday or a quick break to discover your home has been broken into is an awful experience for anyone to endure," said Claire Foster, spokesperson for Churchill Insurance.
Locking items away in a good storage system may be an effective way to prevent loss through burglary.
Last year, Churchill highlighted the fact that some £2.6 billion worth of accidents occur around the home as a result of DIY attempts gone wrong.
