Brits urged to be wary of garden thieves

17 June 2008

One in four items stolen from British gardens last year was worth between £101 and £400, new figures released by Sainsbury's Home Insurance show.

Furthermore, just over ten per cent were worth between £401 and £1,000, highlighting the importance for homeowners to take steps to ensure their possessions are kept safe from the growing problem of garden theft.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "Garden theft is on the increase and people need to take care to protect their homes.

"Homes seen to have 'rich-pickings' that are left unsecured, may be targeted again so as well as tightening up security it's worth picking a home insurance policy that allows you to benefit from and protect your no claims discount."

It was also estimated that homeowners will spend £3.6 billion on the garden this year, though many people would be well advised to invest in some secure storage accommodation for their garden furniture should they wish to take a holiday.
