Insurers have moved to warn homeowners of the potential dangers of DIY projects as growing numbers choose to offset falling equity levels by sprucing up their homes.
According to a recent study from Halifax
Home Insurance, more than seven million
UK households are currently living with a NERD (Never Ending Renovation Drama) as they fail to get round to completing a long-term project.
What's more, many are opting to cut corners and do the work themselves rather than employ a professional tradesman, thereby potentially putting their possessions at risk and even invalidating their insurance cover should things go wrong.
Andrew Lowe, head of
home insurance for Direct Line, noted: "We recommend that professional advice is sought before undertaking any major DIY work, such as knocking down walls or fitting kitchens or bathrooms."
As well as making sure their home is covered DIY-ers should look into secure storage facilities to protect their possessions in the event of an accident, such as a leaking radiator or botched paintjob.
