Leeds property demand soars as 567 go for one house

05 August 2008

More than 500 people have put their names forward for a single property in a popular area of Leeds, highlighting the extent of the housing shortages currently facing those looking to move in the Yorkshire city.

According to Leeds City Council, some 567 applications have so far been received for the council home in the Headingley suburb, an area popular with young professionals and students, and currently suffering from a shortage of affordable and social housing.

While local councillor Les Carters has expressed his surprise at the demand, he believes that this case reflects a wider problem being faced across the county as well as the country.

"The fact that 567 people are bidding on one property should serve as a reminder to the Government that the country is crying out for additional social housing," he told the Daily Mirror.

Anyone struggling to get a place of their own in Leeds may want to look into safe storage solutions until they are able to get enough money together to put down deposit on a property with more space.
