Canoe believe it? Interest in Panama property soaring

07 August 2008

Interest in property in Panama has boomed on the back of the 'canoe man' story, local experts have revealed.

As well as showcasing John and Anne Darwin as incompetent crooks, the recent court case has served to highlight the many attractions of the Central American country to Brits, not least its affordability, excellent climate and stunning natural scenery.

According to the website RightmoveOverseas.co.uk, the interest among Brits has doubled in comparison to this time last year, with particular spikes having been observed after the story broke and during the court case.

Paul Collins, property editor of BuyAssociation.co.uk, noted: "Before this whole thing started, a lot of people didn't really consider Panama as a viable destination for moving overseas.

"Now that they've looked into how it works and how possible it is - and the advantages of going out there - I think it has become a lot more popular."

Anyone thinking of faking their own deaths and heading to the tropics for a new life may want to invest in safe storage solutions at home in case they change their mind.
