Brits pack up their bags 'and head for Turkey'

26 June 2009

Turkey is becoming an increasingly popular location for Brits to pack up their bags and escape to, one industry expert has claimed.

According to Elisabeth Dobson, head of private clients at World First, this is because the country does not have the euro as its legal tender.

This means property buyers are finding it to be very good value for money.

They can eat, drink and live fairly cheaply and council tax is around the equivalent of £150 a year, Ms Dobson continued.

She explained: "Expats can sell their house in the UK, buy an apartment in Turkey, bank the rest of the money and live off the interest as well as their pension.

"You can live very comfortably off the state pension alone."

Overseas mortgage specialist Conti recently reported that mortgage applications for Turkish properties in the first five months of the year increased by 65 per cent compared to the end of 2008.

When moving overseas it may be a good idea to put some belongings into storage while they are waiting to be shipped over to a new home.
