Homeowners 'may require self storage to accommodate lodgers'

30 October 2009

It seems that homeowners across the UK may be placing some of their belongings into storage in order to make room for lodgers.

Research published earlier this week by Halifax revealed that the number of homeowners choosing to rent out their spare rooms is on the rise.

Figures released by the organisation show that lodger numbers in Britain have risen by 23 per cent since 2006.

Commenting on the findings, Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said renting out a room is a great way to earn some extra cash.

"But it's important to seek advice from your home insurer beforehand, as this can often impact on the terms of your cover, and failure to let your insurer know of your changed circumstances could potentially invalidate a future claim," he added.

Jonathan Moore, UK country manager at EasyRoommate.co.uk, recently suggested that the increase in lodgers is likely to continue.

People can make the process of moving house easier by using self storage facilities.
