Rural property owners 'underestimate crime risks'

22 December 2009

Rural homeowners underestimate the crime risks they face, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by Halifax found that country dwellers are less security-conscious than people living in urban areas.

Of those polled, 30 per cent of rural property owners admitted that they leave their door unlocked most days.

Furthermore, 70 per cent do not use a burglar alarm, with 11 per cent of respondents claiming they do not see the point of having one installed.

Commenting on the findings, Martin Foulds, a senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Rural residents should be especially vigilant during this festive season, with burglars aware of the increased value of home contents nestled under the Christmas tree."

According to Direct Line, the average Brit will spend £363 on ten gifts this year, with the majority of people storing their gifts in an unsecured place around the home.

Homeowners affected by fire may wish to use self storage facilitates for some of their belongings.
