Homeowners offered power cut tips

20 January 2010

Homeowners have been offered tips on how to deal with a power cut to their property.

Energy comparison service uSwitch.com compiled the advice after thousands of homes were left without electricity at various points during the recent big freeze.

The organisation recommended that homeowners are properly prepared by keeping a stock of torches, batteries and candles.

People should also make an effort to check on their elderly neighbours and ensure that pipes around the house are properly insulated if temperatures fall below freezing.

Emma Bush, an energy expert at uSwitch.com, commented: "Energy companies will always try to get the supply back up and running again as quickly as possible, but in severe weather such as snow this can take time."

In related news, a recent poll carried out by consumer group Which? found that millions of homeowners are concerned about their energy bills following the cold snap during December and January.
