Phil Spencer tells Wales to provide incentives for house buyers

23 February 2010

Presenter of Location, Location, Location Phil Spencer has said that first-time buyers in Wales should be given assistance to help the housing market into recovery.

The TV host suggested to the Western Mail it would be a good idea to provide the type of help that has been seen in other countries such as Australia, where a one-off A$7,000 (£4,088) payment has been provided to help people with the ten per cent tax on goods and services.

He commented: "First-time buyers are still struggling to save up deposits. It is vital we have first-time buyers because they are what really gets the market moving."

In 2008 Spencer campaigned with his co-presenter Kirsty Allsop for the government to abolish stamp duty for first-time buyers looking to buy homes for less than £250,000.

His remarks follow a recent Council of Mortage Lenders report stating that experts remain in a "period of uncertainty" about the housing market and economy.

People planning to move house could make the process easier by using self storage facilities.
