Clutter-free homes linked to better health

03 June 2010

Properties that are free from mess and clutter tend to have healthier occupants, according to recent research.

It was found that people who live in clutter-free and tidy environments are more likely to be fit and healthy than those who are surrounded by their belongings.

The study was carried out by Indiana University, which looked at the homes and activity levels of 998 residents of St Louis.

It was found how tidy a home was - more than air quality, the exterior or noise levels - had the biggest impact on the physical health of the inhabitants.

"The interior condition of their house seemed to be the only thing affecting their physical activity. It was not at all what we expected," said Professor NiCole Keith.

A rainy day was recently proposed by interiors expert Cheryll Gillespie as being the perfect time for taking a serious look at possessions and de-cluttering.
