Demand for properties on the increase

15 July 2010

The number of people looking for a new home rose last month while the total amount of properties on the market decreased.

This is according to the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), which found that on average each branch had 279 people looking for a home on their books compared with 265 in May.

But the amount of people who are looking to put their house on the market fell, with the branch average slipping from 62 in May to 59 last month.

As a result of this, the number of sales per centre fell from eight to six during the course of June.

NAEA president Michael Jones said: "There is clearly demand for property at present but these figures suggest that the banks are still being restrictive in their mortgage lending policies to buyers."

Selwyn Lim, director of Mouseprice.com, recently warned prospective buyers not to get too stressed over how much a property is costing them.
