Renovate homes 'in tune' with their design

22 July 2010

Before beginning to renovate a home, consider the appearance of the property and what styles will suit it.

This is the advice offered by interior designer Trevor Compton, who gave his 1950s house an Art Deco makeover.

The stylist told Canadian publication the Edmonton Journal that when he is working on a property, the home often "speaks" to him about what styles will suit it best.

Mr Compton explained that although his house was built 20 years after the artistic movement, its clean lines are perfectly suited to the design aesthetic.

He added that he once worked with a woman who had decorated a similar style home to his own in a Victorian look, but felt that this had done the property "a disservice".

"It was such a jarring disconnect between what the house style should have been and what it was," Mr Compton said.

This view was also recently promoted by Wicked Local, which suggested finding antique furniture or decor that comes from the same period as the home, as it will complement the interior.
