Green home purchases 'could be encouraged by stamp duty'

23 July 2010

Increasing numbers of people may decide to buy a new, greener home thanks to a reduction in stamp duty.

Consumers looking for a house may opt for a newer build due to proposals to increase the cost of stamp duty on older, poorly insulated properties, according to Vernon Pethard, founder of newhomesforsale.co.uk.

He explained that the increase in the tax, which is aimed at cutting the UK's greenhouse gas emissions by making homes more efficient, could deter people from selecting an old property as they are hard to bring up to standard.

"These measures may result in more people choosing new [homes] because in addition to being greener, new homes are more economical to own," Mr Pethard added.

The Green Investment Bank Commission recently suggested some ideas that would help the government to meet its target on emissions, which included improving household energy efficiency by offering subsidies or loans for installing green facilities.
