Home improvements 'more valuable than holidays'

26 July 2010

People considering redecorating their homes have been told that it is more valuable than spending money on going on holiday.

According to Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, money would be better spent on home decorating than travelling.

He said: "You could say they are more essential than going away for a holiday in this day and age."

His comments come in response to B&Q owner Kingfisher announcing earlier this month that its UK sales had fallen over the summer period.

In the ten weeks leading up to mid-July, UK sales dropped by 4.4 per cent, while total sales fell by 3.6 per cent.

Figures from Santander Mortgages also revealed that first-time buyers spend £3,782 on average to redecorate their properties - nearly twice as much as homeowners in the 1970s.

Mr Leech's comments are likely to encourage homeowners to use self-storage facilities, as they might require additional space to hold their belongings while they redecorate their properties.
