UK homeowners have been advised by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) that their properties may soon be at greater risk of flooding.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the organisation, suggested that many houses have recently been built in areas where the threat of such a disaster is more likely.
"Flood risk is the main catastrophic risk in the UK and we know that climate change will bring increased flood risk to the UK," he explained.
The ABI insurance expert called for the government to make "robust planning decisions", since premiums are likely to go up if too much flood damage takes place.
According to the Guardian, the floods that hit parts or England, Northern Ireland and Wales in 2007 cost the insurance industry £3 billion.
If your home is damaged as a result of water damage, it may be smart to use a self-storage facility to keep personal possessions.
