It is often suggested that an artist's work is interrupted when they have children, but one novelist has suggested this is not always the case.
Writing for the Guardian, Frank Cottrell Boyce cited an oft-quoted phrase by Cyril Connolly: "There is no more sombre enemy of good art than the pram in the hallway."
It suggests that creative types who plan on continuing their artistic pursuits may be halted by the chaos that comes with parenthood.
However, Mr Cottrell Boyce noted that his writing has always been intertwined with his role as a parent, which he claimed is the same for two other authors - JK Rowling and JG Ballard.
He explained that he often goes on research trips with his kids and the lack of tranquillity helps his imagination.
Mr Cottrell Boyce has written several successful books and screenplays, including Millions, which is a children's story that won the 2004 Carnegie medal.
Not all artists are like the author though, so if you are struggling to write a novel or concentrate on a painting it could be worth tidying up the house by putting personal possessions into a self-storage facility.
