Homeowners who are planning to de-clutter their property before they move should take a positive view of the changes.
This is according to the Centre Daily Times, which offered advice to one of its readers who is planning to downsize to a smaller home.
It suggested that seeing the change as a positive move would make the experience of removing belongings seem less painful.
"We often associate downsizing with loss. But it can be freeing, if you approach it with the right attitude," the report suggested.
It added that for many people de-cluttering can be a way to make a home safer and less stressful to live in if they find there are too many possessions lying around.
For those looking to move getting rid of excess belongings can also be a way to attract buyers, the Times Daily recently acknowledged, as it enables prospective buyers to imagine what their belongings would look like in the space.
