Scottish mortgages use lowest income level

25 August 2010

Homeowners in Scotland use the lowest proportion of their income to pay off their mortgage of anywhere in the country.

A recent study by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) found that during the second quarter of 2010, Scottish residents spent less of their income on their mortgage interest compared to all other areas of the UK.

Standing at 9.3 per cent, the figure is the lowest seen in any area of Britain since 1996 and comes as 12,700 loans were advanced for property purchases in the country.

CML Scotland policy consultant Kennedy Foster said: "There have been some positive signs for the housing and mortgage markets in Scotland in recent months with increased activity and reduced deposits."

This report comes despite the news from Lloyds TSB that the Scottish property market has not progressed in the three months to July 31st 2010, with the average home price falling 2.9 per cent on the previous quarter.
