More new homes needed urgently, says expert

31 August 2010

New properties are in short supply and are urgently needed in the UK, according to one expert.

A present there is an undersupply of homes and more needs to be done to address this problem, according to Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation.

He warned that the shortfall could result in serious implications for both society and the economy if the problem is not sorted out, warning that there have already been noticeable effects seen in the amount of people who are living at home into their 30s and 4.5 million people being named on housing waiting lists.

"We estimate that we have already got a housing shortfall of a million and [for] every year that we are not building 200,000 plus homes that million shortfall is getting bigger," Mr Turner said.

His comments were in response to the new report from the Policy Exchange, which proposed a community-controlled planning system with those who are the most impacted by construction deciding on what should be built.
