UK homeowners may see an increased need for storage facilities in the first half of 2010 due to an upturn in home improvement activity.
New research conducted by Sainsbury's Bank shows that just under one in five personal loans taken out by homeowners in the first six months of the year was arranged to pay for home improvement work.
This continues the increased demand for renovation work seen in 2009 compared to the preceding two years, with only 14.1 per cent of loans in 2007 being used for home improvements.
According to Steven Baillie, head of loans at Sainsbury's, this trend could be occurring due to the recent recession persuading people to spruce up their current properties instead of moving.
He said: "Some recent reports indicate that many Britons are delaying buying major items at the moment, but our figures indicate that when it comes to our homes, improving them is the exception."
Another way in which homeowners can improve their living space is by de-cluttering, with expert Beverley Wade telling the Daily Express this week that the end of summer is a good time to do so.
