Homeowners should keep homes safe when on holiday

21 November 2011

It is essential for homeowners to keep their home safe when they are on holiday, the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has said.

Graeme Trudgill, head of corporate affairs at BIBA, advised homeowners to take out home insurance, building and contents.

"Your insurance broker can give you advice on home security, whether you have an approved five year mortice lock on your fire exit door, if you have an alarm switch the alarm on and if you have valuables put them in the safe. Don’t make it easy for them; make sure it is secure and insured," he said.

"Don't put on Facebook that you are about to go on holiday because the burglars are all over the internet looking at peoples activities, even if a professional footballer is playing an away match, they'll know about that and they'll get in there."

BIBA is the UK's leading general insurance organisation. It represents the interests of insurance brokers, intermediaries and customers, and they have partner members from the leading companies in the insurance industry.

A self storage unit is a great place to store valuable items when on holiday or on a long-term basis.
