Home maintenance is something that needs to be done on a regular basis to ensure their property is in "good nick", suggested an expert.
Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor at the self-build magazine Build It, explained that home maintenance was an ongoing project with small jobs achievable throughout the year.
"It's true that a poorly kept home can contain numerous hazards," she said.
"A big check and home MOT should be carried out every autumn in preparation for the colder months, and spring so you can enjoy your home in the summer."
Ms DeSouza went on to explain that there was a serious side of keeping on top of things.
"For example, areas of damp and mould in a house – however small – could potentially escalate to the point of causing homeowners to have allergic reactions, asthma attacks or even respiratory illnesses," she stated.
"Rotten wood can cause injuries, as can loose tiles – all of which can easily be kept on top of."
Home maintenance can be made easier by decluttering the home through shifting unwanted items into a self storage unit.
