First-time buyers access to rural properties 'tough'

21 December 2011

People looking to get their foot on the property area in rural areas face a lot of difficulties, Smiths Gore has suggested.

Jason Beedell, head of research at Smiths Gore, thinks this situation will worsen unless the government comes up with some "innovative thinking" about how best to address the problem.

"Whether that happens through the national planning policy framework, the localism bill or something outside of those two, we really hope that does happen," he said.

"Rural areas, including market towns, are becoming less and less affordable. With that, you get the knock-on effects of demands for services – things like pubs and village shops."

Mr Beedell added that this put extra pressure on young families, preventing first-time buyers from living in these areas.

A self storage unit can be used to safely store valuable belongings, furniture and family heirlooms.

Smiths Gore is a firm of property consultants with offices in key locations throughout the UK and associates in the USA, the Caribbean and the Far East.

The firm specialises in rural property: estate management, forestry, sporting and farm management.
