Last year was a "momentous year" for the renewables industry, according to RenewableUK.
Maria McCaffery, chief executive of the trade and professional body for the UK wind and marine renewables industries, explained that the sector had been growing steadily and it looked like it would continue to do so this year.
"There is absolutely no let up, as far as I can see, in the challenges facing the sector as we move into 2012 and get ever closer to the significantly higher levels of deployment that our renewables targets need," she said.
"Our sector and our levels of deployment have been growing steadily over the recent past and last year was absolutely no exception to that trend."
Ms McCaffery added that the UK is on the "cusp of a low carbon revolution", one that will see billions of pounds invested into the country's economy.
This, she explained, will lead to the creation of thousands of "green collar" jobs that will go a long way to helping cement the UK as a world leader in the development of offshore wind, wave and tidal technology.
