Safestore Wandsworth Supports Local Primary School

We recently received a tweet from Harriet, parent of a child who attends the Floreat Wandsworth Primary School but also the design and project manager for the Community Garden Project – a scheme that the school are trying to develop which is run by volunteers.

The aim of the project is to teach the children about plants and food growing, create a peaceful space for all, and offer learning opportunities and community connections.’

The school is located just along Garratt Lane from our new Wandsworth Store.  When the store was being rebuilt, Harriet visited the site on the hunt for any materials that they could use to develop the garden.  Being resourceful and creative – all on a limited budget - she approached the builders, Underwood Carpenter, who were on site.

The builders were more than happy to donate some of the building materials they no longer needed and would ultimately only end up in a skip.  They even brought some of the heavier stuff down to the school.  Some of the bricks were used to make this glorious Bug Hotel, which in time could house everything from Woodlice to Hedgehogs.

How to Build a Bug Hotel

If you’re interested in creating your own Bug Hotel, there are detailed instructions on Wild About Gardens – Build a Bug Mansion, including a list of materials you can use.

If you’re interested in supporting the project in any way email floreatgarden@gmail.com as they would love to hear from you.

We can’t take a lot of credit for this as it was building firm Underwood Carpenter who donated the materials, but it was great to be able to connect with the local community. We do hope to visit the Gardens soon and look forward to watching its progress in years to come.
