A student guide: the City of Leeds

Leeds is a thriving, student friendly city that is cheap, fun and has lots going on. With three different universities and a range of other colleges too, Leeds is an ideal place to be a student. Whether you’ve got an offer from a Leeds university or you’re considering putting in an application, read on for a comprehensive guide to being a student in Leeds.

Good Areas to Live

There are many places in Leeds that you could choose to live as a student and not have to fork out too much on rent.  Hyde Park, Headingley and Woodhouse are popular student areas, but students live all over the city.

Transport

There are plenty of buses connecting you all over the city, as well as train stations to the areas of the city that are a bit further afield. They are regular and not too expensive either. London is only two and a half hours away on the train, and Leeds Bradford Airport offers flights all over the world too.

If you wanted to, you could have a car whilst at university, but as a big city, Leeds can get quite congested throughout the day. If you’re planning on using a car to do anything other than to get home, then it may not be worth the hassle.

Sport

Leeds is a great city for sport, with Leeds United at Elland Road, the Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rugby League Club all within the city. There are 160 tennis courts in the city’s parks as well as rugby, football, cricket and hockey pitches, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a skate park.

Arts/Culture

Leeds has so much going on when it comes to arts and culture. With several internationally recognised art galleries, such as the Henry Moore Institute and Leeds Art Gallery, it’s own theatre, opera house, ballet company and national museum and several cinemas, you’ll never be short of something to do!

Nightlife

If you love music, then Leeds is a great city for you, with a whole host of live music venues to choose from, including big venues like O2 Academy and Leeds University Union and smaller ones like Nation of Shopkeepers, Brudenell Social Club and Belgrave Music Hall.

Of course, with this much going on, the bars, pubs and clubs aren’t a let-down either. Whatever your scene, there’s sure to be something to suit you. From the big chain nightclubs to small, local venues and upmarket cocktail bars, the nightlife in Leeds is nothing if not thriving.

Places to Eat

There are lot of student friendly places to eat in Leeds. From coffee for £2.50 from Laynes and deli sandwiches for £3.95 from Hepworth’s Deli, to a whole variety of street food in the Trinity Food Kitchen for £4-£8, whatever your tastes, you’re sure to find something to eat that you’ll love for a good price.

Places to Shop

There are excellent shopping opportunities all over the city whatever your budget. From designer shops in the Victoria Quarter and high street stores in the Trinity Complex to indie shops, vintage shops and the various markets, if spending is your hobby, Leeds is the perfect city for you!
