I was originally given a quote over the telephone from the call centre. When I called back to book I was told this was incorrect and the price increased.
I was advised I needed to pay £75 refundable deposit on the day. I arrived with this in a van full of my furniture but was told I couldn't pay it by cash and didn't have my bank card with me.
I was refused access to the storage unit. I was forced to have to ring around family for a debit card to use. If safe store do not accept cash they should make this clear.
I was then asked to pay in addition to the deposit 4 weeks storage costs up front. Again I was never advised of this despite numerous communication with Safestore.
The advertising board outside safe store states 24hr hour access, which is why I booked it although after booking I was advised this is only the case for a limited number of storage units on the ground floor - the outside sign does not make that clear and therefore I believe this is false advertising.
Taking all these points into consideration I believe the standard of service provided by safe store has been so far very poor.

I got conflicting information about what I needed to provide between the branch and head office.

The gentleman at the branch was obviously just trying to play by the rules but wasn't willing to give me any help except for what sounded like he was reading from a list of answers.

I came up with a solution in the end but it wasn't easy

The guy on the desk didn't have my details down correctly, had booked me in for a much longer time period as wanted and no one told me to bring a padlock, so I had to pay extra for that.

1. Customer service upon arrival was extremely poor - representatives did not introduce themselves and I was not even invited to sit down for the registration!

2. Price was more expensive than quoted - I know the price originally quoted was excluding VAT and insurance so before I checked in I made a call to find out what I would have to pay in total per week. Was quoted £11.50/week for my booking, inclusive of VAT and insurance. When I went there they tried to charge me slightly over £70 for four weeks of storage (excl padlock), clearly not what I was told over the phone. They said that there was no record of my earlier phone conversation, implying that I was plucking figures out of the air. In the end they gave me a different figure and I paid because I was in a hurry and my movers were waiting. Your employee tried to justify my payment by saying that it was only an extra £0.50 per week (or something like that) but it is the principle of the matter! Also tried to imply that I shouldn't mind paying more because I had been given a bigger room - they didn't have the room size I originally booked. Well, that's your problem not mine; I didn't even need the extra space and I'm supposed to be happy about paying extra money for it?

3. Forced me to buy an overpriced padlock after giving me so much hoo-ha about padlocks having to come in their original packaging. When I bought a padlock your employee tried to throw away the packaging - so that in future if I ever decided to store with you I would have to buy another padlock?

4. Storage layout very weird, no signages to point me to my room. Even the professional movers I hired to help me move thought it was very confusing.

On the whole I would NEVER use safestore again. I used BigYellow last year and had absolutely no problems. This year I thought to give Safestore a try as your store is nearer to my intended address and your quote was slightly cheaper. Bad judgement on my part.
