Spring Storage Switch: How to Rotate Your Belongings as the Seasons Change
Make space for the season you're in
Spring is the perfect time for a fresh start, and many of us are more than ready to shake off those dark winter days and enjoy a brighter, lighter way of life again. That seasonal shift often comes with a practical problem, though: where do you put everything you won't be using again until next autumn/winter?
Winter coats, bulky bedding, boots, heaters and all the other cold-weather essentials don't magically disappear when spring arrives. At the same time, garden furniture, outdoor equipment, sports gear and summer clothes are ready to come out of hibernation. The places you keep your spring and summer gear probably aren't suitable for stashing your autumn and winter items, so you can't simply swap everything around.
Rather than cramming everything into unsuitable cupboards or other nooks and crannies, a more effective approach is to rotate your belongings with the help of a self storage unit. Making it a habit to do this each season will free up lots of space at home and ensure you always have what you need to hand.
Reset your home for spring
In Britain, we have to own a lot of belongings because we experience a lot of weather. Our seasons fluctuate wildly, and we have to be prepared for everything from heatwaves to gales. Unless you have a house with several wings and a utility room the size of a barn, you probably don't have enough space to comfortably store everything you own.
If your wardrobes are overstuffed, the garage is full and your spare room is no longer somewhere a guest could sleep, a fresh approach to storage is what you need. What better time to start than spring?
Think about what you'll actually need over the next few months:
- Lightweight clothes
- Gardening tools
- Outdoor furniture
- Sports equipment
- Lightweight bedding and low-tog duvets
- Umbrellas and raincoats (it will still rain, of course)
Everything else can be stowed away. Move winter-specific items into self storage and free up valuable space at home. Everything will seem much more manageable, and you'll be able to find what you need without digging around or stepping over things.
Pack winter items away properly
Our secure, indoor self storage units are clean and dry, so your belongings will be safe and sound. It's worth storing things properly so they remain in good condition over the coming months. A little preparation now will save you harder work when autumn comes around:
- Wash and fully dry clothing, including coats, scarves and gloves
- Air out heavy bedding, duvets and blankets, making sure everything is clean and dry before packing
- Clean boots, shoes and wellies, and consider using shoe trees or stuffing them with dry newspaper to help them hold their shape
- Wipe down heaters and other seasonal appliances, checking for rust and treating if needed
Once everything is clean and dry, pack items into sturdy plastic boxes or vacuum storage bags to keep things organised. Label your boxes clearly, and keep anything you might need before autumn closest to the front of your unit.
Bring spring and summer into your home
Once your winter belongings are safely stowed away, you can turn your attention to the things you'll actually be using.
- Make use of your newly freed-up wardrobes and drawers. Your spring and summer clothes may have been crammed in alongside your winter wardrobe; spread them out so you can actually see and access what you want to wear.
- Set up your garden or balcony with furniture and a parasol to create an inviting outdoor space, whether for working from home or simply sitting outside with your morning coffee.
- Check your bikes for flat tyres and have the brakes looked at if needed.
- Go through your camping gear and sports equipment for missing or damaged items. Now is a good time to replace those bent tent pegs before you actually need them.
Make the most of flexible self storage
You can always retrieve belongings from your unit if you need them. Our weather is nothing if not unpredictable, so if a thick winter coat is called for in June, you can simply go and get it.
You can also move to a larger or smaller unit depending on how much you need to store in any given season. As each new season approaches, swap your belongings in and out so that you always have what you need at home, with plenty of space to move around.
