It’s Armed Forces Day here in the UK on 30th June 2018 and we are delighted to promote and support a charity that is local to our store in Preston in the hope that they will raise plenty of funds on the big day and beyond for this worthy cause. Armed Forces Group Preston will be hosting a day of music, parades and stalls to entertain the public and raise awareness of what Armed Forces Day is all about.
So what is Armed Forces Day for?
This is an annual event that takes place on the last Saturday of June; it celebrates and recognises our Armed Forces and all that they do to protect our country, promote peace and provide humanitarian aid across the world. There is a national event, which will take place in Llandudno, North Wales this year and while that’s not a charitable event in itself, there are various local events throughout the country that are arranged and organised by local charities to raise much-needed charitable funds.
What’s going on in Preston?
In Preston this year, the event will be held at the Flag Market in Preston and the lineup includes:
- Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment parade
- Music by a variety of acts including Kevin Simm (winner of The Voice) and BGT finalists Tim and Jack
Why do we need an Armed Forces Day?
Many people in the UK want the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to those who are currently serving in the Army, Navy or Royal Air Force, and to pay respect to those who have served previously, particularly during wartime. The support given by the public at such events serves as a morale boost to those currently serving, and their families, and all funds raised are used to support the armed services in various ways.
Armed Forces Group Preston’s work and aims
Preston City Council opened a one-stop-shop advice centre that is available to all current and past members of the armed forces and their families. The centre is used to ensure that those who need help - in whatever form - can be supported to access that help.
Practical advice and support is offered across the fields of:
- Employment and education
- Finances (including pensions and benefits advice)
- Health (emotional and physical)
- Veterans Badge applications
- Social activities
Armed Forces Group Preston provides this advice and support to all veterans (past and serving) of the armed forces as well as to the Women’s Land Army, Arctic Convoys, Timber Corps and Bevin Boys. As well as advising on how to access personalised support across the areas listed above, Armed Forces Group Preston offers an ear to listen by those who understand the particular stresses, strains and difficulties that are common among armed service personnel.
