How self storage can help when downsizing
Most people who downsize do so when they retire — they want a home that is easier to maintain, and they want to free up the capital tied up in their existing house to supplement their pension or to spend on holidays and other treats. Others downsize when moving to a better area (e.g. to move closer to a good school). Whatever your reason for downsizing, you will be faced with the task of deciding what will or won’t fit into your new home.

A question of scale
Downsizing will involve not only having fewer pieces of furniture (and generally fewer belongings) but also making sure the items you do take with you are proportionate to the size of your new house.
Your 3 seater sofa, which fits beautifully into your existing front room, might not physically fit into your new front room — or if it does, it might look oversized and make the room feel crowded.
You can use a floor plan of your new home and measure larger items of furniture to get a feel for what should fit well, but sometimes you just need to physically see how things look in situ.
When you move into your new home, take the basics (a bed and bedding, kitchen utensils and equipment, and something to sit on) and spend the first day or two marking out the dimensions of your existing furniture using masking tape on the floor.
Meanwhile, you can keep your furniture in a self storage unit until you are sure of what you want to take. Anything you don’t bring into your new home can be kept in storage (in case your children or grandchildren need them for their homes), sold or given to charity.

A smaller home may well mean that you will have less storage space. Be creative with how you create storage spaces using your furniture — opt for an Ottoman bed, a dining table with drawers and efficient use of your understairs cupboard.
If you are still struggling to find room for items such as gardening equipment, spare seating or beds (for entertaining occasional guests), camping or sports equipment, consider using a self storage unit. You can rent a storage unit for a few pounds a week in any size from 10 sq ft (car boot size) to a warehouse of over 500 sq ft. Treat it as an extension to your home that you can rent at a fraction of the cost of however much it would be to buy a larger home.
