How Self Storage Can Help During Divorce or Relationship Breakdown
Relationships break down for lots of different reasons and some breakups can be more traumatic or stressful than others. A divorce or separation is seldom something anybody would choose to go through but it is often a necessary process so that financial matters can be formally resolved and so that both parties can move on to the next phase of their lives.
What will happen to the house?
Depending on the value of the family home and on the needs of those involved, your main home may or may not need to be sold.
If it can be kept by one of you, the other person will need to find somewhere else to live and may not be in a position to buy somewhere of their own because they may still be tied to the existing mortgage. If neither of you can afford to keep the house, it may have to be sold so that both of you can find your own places to live.
In the timeframes involved, it’s highly likely that one or both of you will need to rent somewhere for a while until everything has settled and you both know what your long-term income will look like and can apply for a mortgage.

Furniture, furnishings and personal possessions
If you need to move out, you’ll probably have space in your new home for your personal possessions; it can be comforting to surround yourself with familiar things in the midst of so much upheaval.
For larger items, such as furniture, you may not have room in your new home to keep everything. Your new home might be smaller than your original, or it might be a rental property that is part-furnished.
It’s important not to simply give away, sell or leave behind those larger belongings, though, if it has been agreed that you can keep them. They are yours and at some point in the future you may well move to a larger property or buy a new home that will need to be adequately furnished.
How self storage can help
Consider renting a self storage unit to keep anything you can’t physically fit into your new (or temporary) home; your belongings will be safe, dry and clean and ready for whenever you can take them back. You can rent a unit for just a week or for as long as you need, for a low, weekly cost. You’ll be the only keyholder, so you can rest assured that your possessions will be secure.
