Bedford Beckons: Relocating to Bedford

Bedford Beckons: Relocating to Bedford
Rewind about 15 years, and you might have come across advice suggesting that Bedford wasn't the most desirable place to consider moving to, even if it were the last option available. Fast forward to 2023, however, and Bedford is now a thriving town ideal for commuters, homeworkers, students and families - it’s a great place to live and work!

Why would you want to move to Bedford?

People move to Bedford primarily for its location - and they stay for its character and amenities.

Bedford’s brilliant location

Location-wise, Bedford is ideally placed for anyone who wants to live within a reasonable commuting distance of London (about 35 minutes by train) whilst enjoying easy access to the countryside. Bedford offers lower housing prices than could ever be found in the capital, or indeed in much of the South East, which is another draw for anyone thinking of moving to the area.

There are great transport links by road (A1 and M1), rail and air (Luton airport is 30 minutes away), so living in Bedford will give you easy access to Cambridge, Milton Keynes, London and the Continent.

Bedford’s amazing amenities
In terms of amenities, the town centre is described as ‘bustling’ with a decent range of high street and independent shops in their pedestrianised shopping area and open air market. The multicultural nature of the area means that there is a diverse range of restaurants and eateries to enjoy on a night out.

The social calendar in Bedford is pleasingly full throughout the year. If you’re a real ale fan, CAMRA holds its annual Beer and Cider festival at Bedford’s Corn Exchange - the Corn Exchange also hosts regular live music events of all kinds, from jazz evenings to operatic performances. Other regular events include the River Festival, the Bedford Film Festival, and the theatrical Bedfringe.

There’s also plenty of green space - the Victorian Bedford Park is a great place for a picnic or a wander at lunchtime, whilst the Embankment is perfect for spending time by the river. Countryside surrounds Bedford and there are loads of parks and RSPB wetlands to explore.

In terms of education, the vast majority of schools in Bedford (including several independent primaries and secondaries) are rated good or outstanding.
