What is self storage?

Self storage is a flexible, affordable way to store:
  • Personal belongings
  • Household furniture and furnishings
  • Business stock (ideal for online retailers)
  • Business archives, tools and equipment.
  • Student belongings during holidays
As the sole keyholder to your unit, you can access it as often as you like and add or remove items whenever needed. Storage units are usually rented by the week, and you can keep yours for as long as you like.

What are the different types of self storage?

There are several types of self storage options to choose from. Which one is right for you will depend on what you plan to store, how long you need storage for, and how readily you need access to your belongings.

Indoor Storage Options

  • Self storage units
Self storage units are housed within secure buildings, and each unit is secured with its own lock or keypad to which you would be the only person with access. Storage centres can be accessed at any time during opening hours.

Many units have drive-up access and use of covered loading bays to make it easier for you to move larger items in and out of storage; forklift trucks and pallet trucks may also be available.

Units range in size from 10 sq ft lockers (great for student storage, left luggage and small business archives), to warehouse sized spaces of 500 sq ft+.
  • Warehouse storage
Businesses that need to store large equipment, plant and machinery may look to rent or purchase warehouse space and hire security personnel to guard it. Warehouse storage is usually rented on a long-term basis under a traditional commercial lease and may attract tax liabilities.

Outdoor Storage Options

  • Storage containers

Large, steel storage containers may be delivered to you to be kept on your land, and are generally marketed towards business users.

Some are available as external storage units at self storage stores, and may be the most suitable option for storing large commercial equipment, boats or vehicles (though you may have to remove any flammable liquids).

  • Lockups
Lockups were the go-to storage option for many years before the self storage industry became established in the UK. These are typically privately rented garages with security limited to a lock on the up-and-over door.

Mobile Storage Options

  • ‘Pod’ storage
If you don’t have your own transport to take belongings to a self storage store, you could arrange for a storage unit to be delivered to your home or place of work.

You can fill your unit yourself, or pay for the storage company to load it for you, and it can either be kept at your location or taken away to be stored at the storage company’s own facilities until you need it back.
  • Box storage
This is designed for smaller items that you don’t need easy access to. Boxes are delivered to your home or business, you fill them with whatever you need to store, and they are taken to a secure storage facility until you need them back.

Why do people typically use self storage?

Self storage is used by individuals to store personal/household belongings, and businesses to store commercial items.

Self storage

You may find that you need self storage space as a result of major life events such as downsizing, moving in together, separation or expanding your family. It might also be needed for:
  1. Decluttering - essential if you have visitors staying with you for special occasions, or just to give you more space in your home.
  2. Renovating or redecorating - it’s much easier (and cleaner!) to carry out improvements to your home without having to move the furniture around!
  3. Moving home - you might need to store your household contents for a few days or weeks between selling your house and moving into your new home.
  4. Renting out your home or a room - you might want to make some extra money by renting out your property on AirBnB; guests will expect a clutter-free environment with plenty of space to store their belongings during their stay.

Business storage

Storage for stock, tools and equipment needs to be versatile and easily accessible to prevent delays and maximise efficiency. Your business might benefit from self storage if:
  1. You have archives that need to be stored securely without taking up valuable space in your office.
  2. Your business is growing and has stock, tools and equipment that you can no longer safely store in your existing premises (opting for self storage might be cheaper than moving to larger premises).
  3. You’re an online retailer and you need somewhere to store your goods that you can access quickly and easily to send on to your customers, without taking up room at home.
  4. Your stock fluctuates during the year, and you need short-term storage for extra stock during busy periods.
  5. You need to store your office furniture whilst you move premises.

Student storage

Self storage is really useful for students during the holidays. It’s more secure than leaving belongings in empty dorms, and less hassle than trying to find space for your stuff at home.

What can you store in a storage unit?

You can store almost anything in a storage unit, whether for personal/household or business purposes.
  • Personal storage units could be used for storing:
  • Bulky unseasonable clothes;
  • Christmas decorations;
  • Camping or sports equipment;
  • Garden furniture over winter months;
  • Excess furniture or furnishings after downsizing or moving in with a partner;
  • Household contents during a house move;
  • Student belongings over the holidays.

Businesses can use self storage for a number of purposes, including:

Storing stock (especially if you’re an online retailer, or have fluctuating stock levels throughout the year);
Keeping tools, equipment and machinery safe and secure yet easily accessible;
When moving offices or business premises, to keep your furniture and equipment clean, safe and dry.

What can’t you store

Whilst you can store most items in a self storage unit, there are certain items that cannot be stored, mainly for safety reasons.  We do not permit the storage of:
  • Hazardous goods, toxic materials
  • Pollutants, contaminants, waste
  • Perishable goods, live animals, living plants
  • Cash and securities, illegal goods
  • Explosives, firearms, ammunitions
