A student guide: the City of Liverpool
With five universities, Liverpool has around 50,000 students calling it home. Boasting a diverse culture and vibrant nightlife, as well as a cheaper cost of living, this is an exciting time to be a student in Liverpool.
Good Areas to Live
Liverpool has lots of affordable places to live, with popular student areas including Smithdown Road. With supermarkets, pubs and clubs, takeaway shops, as well as regular buses to the city centre, Smithdown Road is a great place to live.
Transport
With significant road and rail networks, as well as an international airport, port and an underground railway network that serves the locality, Liverpool has an enviable amount of transport links. Only two hours from London, it means getting home at the end of term is easy.
Sport
Liverpool is, of course, home to Liverpool Football Club and Anfield stadium, as well as Everton Football Club, so if you’re into football then you’re in the right place. Liverpool is near England’s Golf Coast too, with three Royal Links courses that have hosted Open Championships and Ryder Cups. The city also offers horse racing at Aintree (home of The Grand National) and Haydock. St Helen’s rugby league club are the most successful club of the Super League era. You can enjoy water sports on Queen’s dock, play tennis at Liverpool International Tennis Tournament and run in a variety of races.
Arts/Culture
Liverpool has the most museums outside of London and many of them are free. The Museum of Liverpool, The Beatles Story and FACT are just some of the museums on offer. Head to the Albert Dock for the cultural quarter and the Tate Liverpool as well as restaurants, bars, and eateries – the perfect place to start getting to know Liverpool. The Liverpool Philharmonic is the place to be for classical music, but it also features theatrical performances and contemporary music.
Nightlife
Liverpool offers varied nightlife. If you want a classy evening of cocktails and bars then visit Albert Dock or Dark Lane, but for those on a tighter budget, there are many cheap nights for students. Head to Café Tabac on Bold Street for tapas, cocktails and classic club tunes, or Brooklyn Mixer for hip-hop and beer.
The Krazy House is an enduring student club that once was the biggest for rock/metal nights, and now hosts dance, rock and indie music. Garlands is the iconic gay club that simply must be seen to be believed. HAUS on Greenland Street is one of the best new clubs on the scene, offering techno, house and more.
Places to Eat
Whether you’re looking for fine dining or an independent bistro, Liverpool has a varied dining scene.
Hope Street is renowned for restaurants such as the London Carriage Works and 60 Hope Street, as well as Side Door, Host and the Quarter.
If you’re a veggie, then you must go to Mello Mello. With an affordable menu as well as a plethora of gigs ranging from experimental rock and punk to electronica, Mello Mello is the place to go. Vegan scran can be found at The Egg, in a large loft space with excellent views of the city.
Places to Shop
Liverpool One is the destination for all your high street shopping needs, and Bold Street has lots of independent shops and eateries – Lonely Planet rates it as one of the best shopping streets in the country. Cavern Walks has a Vivienne Westwood store and boutique store Cricket. Lark Lane is south of the city centre and full of street markets and bohemian boutiques.
